My
first case study for the cd case/ digi pack is Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. The
layout of the cover is a very basic but stands out because of the boldness of
the picture. The layout itself is just the album cover with no use of text but
the case did come with a sticker on it saying the album name and some of the
featuring artists. The little bit of text that is shown not only says featuring
artist but also has a little bit of advertising, “The Highly anticipated return
of Kid Cudi”. The target audience of this album is hip hop fans and because of
the nature of the album and artwork it may also attract a rock and roll fans.
The inside art
work for the album is meant to go with the overall story of the album. The
layout of these artworks is: layering pictures over each other, putting
multiple images on one page and putting the cracked, old paper effect on it. I
feel that these effects add to the dark theme of the album and really suit the
genre. Similarly to the album cover there is no use of text. The technique of
not using any text connotes emotions or themes of horror, Gothicism and fear to
the consumer.
What I would like
to take away from this case study is the photographic effects used on the
inside cover art i.e. the old, cracked paper. I think that this effect will
suit our song because in the video we used the bad TV effect and the old paper
is the somewhat alternative for a photo.
